You simply won’t better this mid-range zoom from Canon. Yes, it’s an L series pro lens, but even for this superb level of engineering, image quality is stunningly sharp throughout the full focal range, and build quality is near enough bomb proof. For candid portrait work, the lens is simply in a class of it’s own. I find this, and my 24-70mm f/2.8L USM are the two lenses that live on my EOS 5D for 95% of the time. It carries a typical Canon price tag, but really is worth every penny!

I cannot get over the useability of this lens. I have been a photographer for over 21 years and this a revelation. I have used Hasselblads. Nikon hi end 35mm and digital and this lens combined with a Canon eos 10d 20d 30 5d etc is a dream to use. It is fast, accurate and silent, magic! It flatters the most average photographer. I borrowed it for a weekend and did not want to give it back. Needless to say, I am now saving up for one. I have to use Nikons at work, but lenses like this are worth changing systems for!

Fantastic photography lens! This Canon lens has a feel of unrivalled quality. Its solid, and workman like construction is matched by it’s incredible image quality. However, being built like a tank lends itself to the issue of excessive weight and like an over indulged festive reveller it might possibly benefit from the loss of a few pounds. Holding a camera with this lens attached can lead to a strenuous shoot and for some quite possibly some shaky shots. Nonetheless, do not despair its image stabiliser more than makes up for such weight issues as it really works incredibly well allowing hand held shutter speeds of 1/80, no problem. The wide aperture of f2.8 is fab and throws the background out of focus isolating it from the importance of the subject. I would unreservedly recommend this lens to wedding and portrait photographers as it further distinguishes your work from that of the public. Shoot away, its what a canon was made for!

Hi. I hired one of these for a wedding shoot I did and now my desire for one of these has gone from “want” to “need”. It is an awesome piece of glass – I used it most during the wedding meal on a Manfrotto 608B monopod to catch those “not posed” pictures. Really crisp, clean shots and plenty of good bokeh. Recommended. I might interested in selling a kidney if anyone is interested! Not really but you get level of desire here I think. WANT.

I’m fairly new to DSLR photography and I agonised for ages before buying this lens. Did I need image stabilisation? Did I really need F2.8? I reasoned that if I didn’t have both of these features, then sometime soon I would probably regret it. So I went ahead and bought the lens last month. Initial thoughts were not too good. Other reviewers have spoken of softness with the lens wide open. I had that in spades and I was genuinely worried. Then it occurred to me that the softness was maybe lack of accurate focus. Perhaps the culprit was Canon’s 9-point AF? So, with the lens stopped down at F2.8 and my 5D MkII set for the centre AF point (I turned off automatic AF point selection), I set out to photograph a friend’s wedding. Boy was I impressed with the results. Sure there were some lost shots but I put that down to my inexperience. I captured a good number of excellent shots – tack-sharp at all apertures including F2.8 and perfect bokeh. And hand-held into the bargain with excellent results at the maximum focal length and slow shutter speeds and some shot indoors without flash. Even cropped the images retain sharpness. So, both the IS and the faster lens came in useful very early in our relationship. So, my advice is to save up and buy this lens. And beware Canon’s 9-point AF when you’re at the mercy of a very shallow depth of field.
