I am impressed with the image quality of this lens. Previously I was using an ultrazoom camera with a x10 optical zoom, which was the equivalent of a 300mm lens on a 35mm. This lens gives far superior image quality at full zoom. The details are clearer and sharper and there is less chromatic aberration. I have used this lens with my Nikon D50 for handheld shots and camera shake is not evident at 200mm. Forget all the critics who say that this lens is not as good as the expensive high-end Nikkors. It’s a good deal for the money, and is a big improvement on the all-in-one ultrazoom digital cameras.

This is an old, discontinued version of a decent, lightweight lens that was recently improved significantly, with revised optics and the addition of optical vibration reduction (VR, like Canon’s IS) that offers you about a two-stop advantage in low light. That means that a picture that would have required a shutter speed of, say 1/200 second on this old lens can generally be taken at about 1/50th of a second on the new version. (Unless your subject itself is moving.) The result is that you can use lower ISO settings for equivalent results or, at maximum ISO, get sharp pictures that you otherwise wouldn’t have been able to manage. Look for the version that includes VR in its name – today (26 Sept 2007) it’s retailing in many places, including Amazon UK sellers, for less than this older one. See Thom Hogan’s pages – bythom.com – for more detail and a comparison between the two lenses. The new one justifies one extra star for its performance.

I’m sure this is a good lens but DO NOT BUY IT, there is a new identically priced version with VR shake reduction, make sure yours has this feature as it will make all the difference at telephoto.

I bought this lens as part of the D50 Twin-Lens Kit which Nikon offered for a while. Principally purchased for its long focal length, I’ve been very happy with it – it has reached my expectations of giving me enough zoom for sporting events at racetracks and arenas.
The lens operates smoothly and autofocusses smoothly and almost noiselessly, and feels well enough built. A word of advice – get a good filter, for both protection but also for optimal focussing ability, as cheaper filters can ruin the lens’ focussing speed. The autofocus can be over-ridden manually by a switch on the lens.
In general, this is a good lens for the money – and is a good starting point for the newly-graduated DSLR photographer from a compact. However, it can be a bit slow to focus, especially in comparison to newer lenses such as the 80-300 mm VR or the standard kit lens, the 18-55 mm. It’s a great compromise between the two, with a not-too-expensive price tag and a good zoom capability.
