Review by Dr. Tom Bell for Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 Lens For Sony Digital SLR Cameras
Rating:
This lens like all zooms of such a huge range is a comprimise. It is made for DSLR so is equivalent to a 28-300 lens in old money. It feels well made. has a good zoom lock. It is a little slow at long telephoto. Actually it is also soft beyond about 150 (220) …. It is worth thinkin also about the 18-125 Sigma. This is a little less versatile but is a sharper optic. increasingly i find i use the telephoto end less and less. If you a birder you will anyway need a longer telephoto.
However remember with DSLR there is a big problem with getting dust in th camera so sometimes an all in one lens can be very useful. If I was staring again i would purchase the Sigma 17-70 for all round use + Sigma 50-200 a recent excellent product from Sigma.

Rating:
This lens is a far more worthwhile investment than the small, cheap zoom lenses that come bundled with most DSLRs. The focal lengths cover almost everything that an entry to mid-level photographer could need, from wide angle 18mm to capture landscapes to the telephoto 200m to minimise the depth of field for engaging portrait shots.
It is a robust lens which feels sturdy and well built compared to the evidently cheap build of, say, the 18-55mm zoom lens which came with my Canon 400D camera.
Its main drawback however is that is not a particularly fast lens when you have it on maximum zoom, with the widest aperture at 200mm being just f6.3, which means that the shutter speed has to be quite slow to compensate. This is inevitable however, unless you are willing to fork out a substantial amount of money for a much pricier lens.
This lens produced some stunning results on a recent safari trip, and it coped well with a range of focusing distances as well as the environment.
If you have invested in a DSLR camera, then it would definitely be worthwhile to add this to your kit – unless you are thinking of becoming a professional photographer, this lens should cover most of your requirements.

This lens is excellent for people just starting up to semi-professionals.
I recommended to buy with the camera body rather than to get the lens that usually comes with beginner Dslrs as I found mine to be a bit cheap and soft (maybe that was just mine – i did have the original version).
This lens has a superb range of 18-200mm (which is around 29-320mm on cropped sensor camera). The ‘DC’ in the model name means this lens can only be used on cropped sensor cameras, like the 1000D / 400D / 40D.
The lens is very light and compact (when zoomed out), so is great for carrying around for long periods of time or holidays.
The build quality is good, and it has internal focusing (the front element doesn’t move) which means you can use polarising filters and the petal shaped hood (supplied in the box).
As the zoom is quite long, there is a zoom lock which can be applied at 18mm to stop the lens from zooming when you don’t want it to (e.g. in your bag).
The filter size for this model is 62mm.
Only negatives are at 200mm the fstop is f/6.3, meaning longer exposures, but works fine in normal daylight. To avoid this you have to pay a lot more.
Also, I had to have mine repaired after 2 years after something came loose inside and Sigma’s quote was £65, which I think is a lot when the lens only cost me £200.
Overall great lens. Recommended for all.

The lens arrived on time and after using it for a day I can say so far I’m very pleased with it. I really like the lens hood that came in the box but it has to be taken off when putting it in my case. At 200mm it’s hard to use it hand held without getting a bit of blur, this is where the Optical Stabilizer version might help but for me it wouldn’t really have been worth the extra money. Surprisingly it isn’t actually to bad at Macro (close ups) but obliviously it isn’t as good as a dedicated macro lens. Overall it’s a really good lens for the price.

I bought this lens from Amazon a few days before departing for a one week holiday on Guernsey. I took over 650 shots with this lens during the week using my Canon EOS 450. The ability to frame shots reliably for indoor and in narrow streets and to reasonable distance for landscape shots is a real advantage over the kit lens. Focus is very slightly soft at 200mm but I would expect that and it doesn’t spoil the results. This lens doesn’t have image stabilization but due to its small size and light weight, I found that I could take perfect shots hand holding the camera almost to the full 200mm on 95% of occasions. As with all zoom lenses, this lens works best above f8. I nearly always use AV so this is easy to achieve but you do need sunny days for best results. Best results i.e. perfect results above f10. The auto focus worked well if a little noisily and on a few rare low light occasions would hunt a little before settling. CA was only visible on shots when reviewed at home on my PC screen and was only slightly noticeable on full zoom at low f numbers. For the price, this lens is definitely worth the investment. I use mine as the standard kit lens now.
Pros, low price, light weight, large zoom range, Cons. minor CA at extreme settings, slightly noisy AF and slight focus softening at full zoom.
